The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department last week encrypted its radio communications, blocking the public from listening to information about public safety matters in real time.
The department is the latest law enforcement agency in the county and state to cut off access to radio communications in response to a California Department of Justice mandate that required agencies to protect certain personal information that law enforcement personnel obtain from state databases. Final tweaks to the new 800 MHz county emergency radio system are underway.
“We thought the to go-live date would be at the end of February. But it’s going to be a little bit later,” Branch County Administrator bud Norman told the 911 board this week.
Contractor J&K Communication has started programming the digital equipment.

Texting, videos and images will be a part of a new 9-1-1 system being rolled out over the next three years.

In the last three years, the Healdsburg Police Department Dispatch Center successfully answered at least 95% of its incoming calls within 15 seconds, according to a new dispatch center data report released last month.
In total, over the last few years, the dispatch center has answered an average of 2,700 911 calls per year.
“A 15-second answer time is the standard set by the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, Public Safety Communications California 911 Emergency Communications Branch. Between Jan. 1, 2018 and Dec. 31, 2021, our center answers 95.33% of all 911 calls in less than 10 seconds, which is the lowest threshold that the system measures,” explained Healdsburg Police Chief Matt Jenkins…
