The call volume coming into the Chatham-Kent police emergency communications centre (ECC) has gone up recently.
A 2020 annual report presented at the police service board this week showed calls increased by seven per cent from 2019 to a total of nearly 199,776 calls for service. Almost 38,000 of the calls were 911 calls, a five per cent jump from 2019.
Inspector Mike Domony said overall telephone activity at the ECC has gone up over the past four years after declining since 2011. Domony also noted the time it takes to deal with a call has increased because of social disorder and mental health issues…

On April 20 at approximately 11 a.m. a 73-year-old woman fell at her home on County Road 109 (Oakland Hills). After falling she was able to get herself to her cell phone and placed a call to 911. Upon making contact with the dispatch center for American Medical Response (AMR) she was asked a few questions. The communicator then transferred her call to a nurse who proceeded to ask her more questions. This nurse determined the call to be non-emergency in nature and dispatched an AMR basic life support unit to her location. A backup location for the Vigo County’s 911 Central Dispatch Center could be included in the new headquarters for the Terre Haute Police Department. The E911 Advisory Board agreed Wednesday to recommend the move to the Vigo County Commissioners. The move would in effect relocate the county’s backup dispatch center from the Emergency Management Agency offices at Hulman Field.
E911 Director Vickie Oster presented a quote of about $37,000 from Garmong Construction Services to include the work in the ongoing remodeling and construction of the new city police station at 222 S. Seventh St., in the former Tribune-Star building…
During her 17 years at the Department of Public Safety Communications, Chelsea Blake has handled various roles, but her recent efforts to talk an injured man through driving himself to the hospital, earned her unprecedented judicial praise.
“My team and I, we’ve heard it all,” said Blake. “We have delivered babies over that phone, restarted hearts over that phone, we are the first of the first responders.”

Paramedics and firefighters with Clallam County Fire District 3 continue to work with a frequent caller and a few other Sequim area residents for abusing 9-1-1 for non-emergency incidents.
Assistant Fire Chief Dan Orr said in a phone interview that one unnamed man who lives on the 1000 block of Old Olympic Highway has called for aid assistance about 140 times since January for non-emergency reasons.
