E-911 working on initiatives, surveys (TN)

Cumberland County E-911 is working to improve services to the community, with plans in place for a mobile communications unit, a backup communications center, and an updated website.

“The tornado in Cookeville in March 2020 took their 911 center offline,” said Terry Williams, director of operations for Cumberland County 911. “We and other folks handled their calls.”

That got 911 Director Eric Ritzman and Williams thinking about contingency plans for the Cumberland County emergency communications center on Southbend Dr…

Securing The Next Generation Of 911

While conducting research for my 2021 Wisconsin Public Safety Commission (WIPSCOM) conference presentation, it became immediately clear that securing the nation’s public safety answering points (PSAPs) is no longer just an IT challenge.
Shifting from an analog to digital operating environment — the next generation of 911 — will require strategic investments into three key areas: people, processes and technology. Text to 911 for Emergency Assistance (OH)

Texting, in recent years, has become one of the most valuable forms of communication among modern day technology—even among emergency response teams. While calling 911 is efficient, certain situations might need a texting feature for ultimate safety. Franklin County’s Emergency Communications centers – including the City’s provider, NRECC, at the City of Dublin – offer the Text to 911 feature, expanding the options available to residents when they are experiencing an emergency.

Text to 911 provides a convenient option for residents to seek emergency assistance under the following situations:

  • If you are in a threatening situation and a voice call would increase the threat.
  • If you are deaf, hard of hearing or have a speech disability.
  • If you are unable to speak due to an injury.
  • If mobile phone reception is poor…

Accidental 911 calls add stress to emergency dispatch centers (OK)

Oklahoma 911 call centers are experiencing a large amount of accidental 911 calls due to safety features available on mobile devices including iPhones and Apple watches.

According to the Oklahoma 911 Management Authority and the State 911 Coordinator, 12 percent of 911 calls in Oklahoma are hang-ups that have to be followed up on. Almost all of these calls are considered accidents.

For each accidental 911 call, dispatchers must follow up to determine if there is a real emergency, adding excess time and attention away from intentional 911 calls… READ MORE

Chautauqua County to Receive Over $165000 in State Aid for Emergency Services (NY)

Chautauqua County has been awarded $165,857 from New York State to make improvements to its 911 response and emergency dispatch operations. The funding, administered by the State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, is part of a $10 million grant announced by Governor Andrew Cuomo on Friday. Cuomo says the funding will enable localities to make critical improvements to their emergency communications infrastructure and will continue the state’s commitment toward ensuring all counties have state-of-the-art dispatching as part of their emergency response operations…
