ORANGE CITY—Two N’West Iowa emergency medical services personnel who each have more than two decades of experience in the field were recently recognized for their outstanding work.

Seventy-year-old Aiko Kamies of Boyden was inducted into the Iowa Emergency Medical Services Association Hall of Fame, while 52-year-old Kevin Harskamp — also of Boyden — was named the organization’s Dispatcher of the Year.

The two men were nominated for the honors for 2020, although the association did not hold its annual conference, trade show and awards ceremony that year due to the coronavirus pandemic…

When hurricanes strike, many communities become vulnerable to high winds and widespread flooding that can cause injury and damage infrastructure. Communities in a storm’s path are often without power, food, or water for days – and for first responders, the main and immediate focus after a hurricane is rescuing and responding to those in need of aid. Last season, public safety officials relied on new technologies to communicate and monitor hurricane activity. During – and in the aftermath of – these storms, FirstNet sustained and restored emergency communications for many hard-hit communities.

FirstNet was built with innovative solutions that help first responders prepare for emergencies. The network’s Band 14 priority and preemption features give public safety access to reliable, interoperable communication service when they need it most – including hurricane season.

Dorchester Co. developing first public safety strategic plan (SC)

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) – Dorchester County public safety leaders are developing the county’s first strategic plan for public safety, and they’re using a survey to get feedback from the community.

The county wants to create a “collaborative vision for public safety” Dorchester Deputy County Administrator for Public Safety Mario Formisano said.

“We want to be less reactive and more proactive,” Formisano said.

An eight-to-12-minute survey is available now for Dorchester County community members. Formisano said part of the survey’s purpose is to gauge the community’s opinion on the quality of service they’re providing and their responsiveness to issues…

KITTCOM rolls out text-to-911 feature Wednesday (WA)

Kittitas County residents will have an entirely new way to summon first responders beginning Wednesday.

KITTCOM is rolling out its text-to-911 service after months of preparations. The service will allow certain demographics, including the hearing impaired to make easier calls for emergency services throughout the county.

KITTCOM Director George Long said the technology behind the service has existed for some time, saying it was originally designed for people who found themselves in a situation where making a voice call could potentially put them in danger…

BC 911 Operators Can Now Hang Up On Callers Waiting For Ambulances (Canada)

The people who answer 911 calls in BC may disconnect if their callers wait on the line for an ambulance, according to new changes by the county’s largest 911 dispatcher.

Allowing 911 operators to hang up allows them to take more calls in total, including urgent police and fire calls, E-Comm said in a press release on Wednesday.

In the past, call takers had to wait on the line until their caller was connected to BCEHS, the police or fire service – a process that has contributed to complaints about delays in the past months..
