Maryland moves to advance Next Generation 911

Transitioning 911 emergency call systems into the digital age is a work in progress nationwide. In Maryland, experts released a fourth and final report on Thursday detailing what Next Generation 911 in the state should include.

The report by the Commission to Advance Next Generation 911 Across Maryland lists several recommendations for 911 call-takers, including that:

  • They be classified as first responders
  • Mental health services for them are streamlined

Burlington County temporarily moves Central Communications operations (NJ)

WESTAMPTON – Multiple employees reported feeling ill at Burlington County’s Public Safety Center on Thursday night, prompting officials to move Central Communications operations to a temporary site.

Staffers returned to the Westampton building Friday morning after multiple inspections found no hazards there, according to a county statement.

It said 10 Central Communications employees were taken to an area hospital “for precautionary examinations,” during Thursday night’s incident…

WESTAMPTON, NJ (BURLINGTON) – Burlington County Central Communications operations were temporarily shifted to the County’s backup center in Mount Laurel Thursday evening due to an investigation at Central’s primary site in the Burlington County Public Safety Center. The investigation was launched at around 8:30 PM Thursday after Central Communications telecommunicators reported feeling ill. The Communications Center is in the Public Safety Building at 1 Academy Drive, Westampton, NJ 08060.

Carbon monoxide alarms inside the building did not activate and a fire personnel check of the air was also negative, however, as a precaution the building was evacuated and the Burlington County Health Department was notified…

911 Dispatcher Accidently Shot (KY)

A 911 dispatcher was accidently shot and killed inside the Bell County 911 Center around 1 a.m. Friday.

Kentucky State Police says two dispatchers were inside the Bell County 911 Center trading firearms when one of the weapons was accidentally discharged, hitting 23-year-old Kyle Garrett, of Frakes.

Garrett was taken to Pineville Community Health Center where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy for Garrett will be performed at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort.

According to the Bell County Sheriff’s Office, non-sworn personnel are not allowed to have firearms in the 911 Center…

First responders honored at Iredell County EMS Awards Banquet (NC)

Dozens of emergency responders were recognized for outstanding service to their community at the 2021 Iredell County EMS Awards Banquet at the Statesville Civic Center on Wednesday evening.

The banquet is held each year to honor Emergency Medical Services employees, as well as first responders and telecommunicators for excellence in pre-hospital care, education and other special achievements.
