31 minutes for police to arrive on scene where officer was killed (IL)

CHICAGO (CBS) — Thirty-one minutes – that is how long it appears to have taken for police to arrive on the tragic scene where Officer Areanah Preston was shot in Avalon Park, in an incident that ultimately took her life.

But dispatchers had been alerted to a round of shots that had been fired, thanks to a high-tech gunshot detection system.

Police Chief Benjamin Moszkowicz was referring the decision to move Hawaii Fire Department’s fire and Emergency Medical Services dispatchers from Hilo’s Central Fire Station on Kinoole Street into the police’s dispatch center at 349 Kapiolani St.

The dispatcher walked the caller through CPR and at one point asked if responders had arrived. The error became clear about eight minutes into the call when the caller, again asked about the location, said she didn’t know for sure, but it was the street leading to Kroger … which would be West Market Street.
