Nancy VanWinkle, director of the center, proposed the idea to employees about getting a dog.
“I had seen, and my assistant had seen, different agencies using dogs
for dispatch,” she said. VanWinkle added that she doesn’t know of
another 911 center in Arkansas with an emotional-support dog.
“When we answer the phone, 80 percent of our calls are not somebody
having a good day,” VanWinkle said. “We hear people take their last
breaths. We hear moms screaming because their children aren’t breathing,
or people who hear noises outside of their houses and are scared — they
don’t know if someone is coming in.
Denison is joining Sherman and a number of area cities along with the
Texoma Council of Governments to continue upgrading equipment for the
next generation of 9-1-1 technology.

at TCOG CJ Derbin-Higgins said the NexGen 911 service is rolling out
nationwide in various phases. Now, the cities are preparing to receive
new equipment allowing for new features, including text to 911 as well
as more accurate geospacial location and upgraded mapping software.
FRANKLIN COUNTY (Sept. 6, 2019) — Makenzie Cleary, a
911 Dispatcher, received a prestigious award for her actions this
summer in helping save a man’s life.
Emergency Services Director John Thierwechter and county
commissioners presented the Emergency Health Service Federation Clinical
Save Award to Cleary.
“We are thankful for Makenzie’s efforts in this critical situation
resulting in a life saved,” said Commissioner Chairman Dave Keller.
McComb Police Chief Damian Gatlin brought more staffing issues to the city board’s attention at Tuesday’s work session.
In
addition to four vacancies in the detective division, Gatlin said he
has five full-time positions available in dispatch, for which people
keep dropping out during training.
Pending county board approval, Piatt County will soon have a new 9-1-1 director.
A
notice sent out by the county on Friday stated that a short reception
would be held following the Sept. 11 county board meeting to welcome Tim
Furman as the new 9-1-1 director.
Furman, a dispatcher for DeWitt County CenCom since September of 2017, confirmed the hire on Facebook.
