BEREA, Ohio — For many Berea residents, Anne Boone has been the reassuring voice they hear when they call the Berea Police Department.
Even
after dispatch services were regionalized in Strongsville five years
ago, “people call and ask for me,” said Boone, who retired at the end of
her shift at noon on Aug. 21 after 35 years as a dispatcher and five
years as a clerk with the BPD.

On a recent weekday afternoon on an upper-level floor of the
Montgomery County Hospital District’s administrative building in south
Conroe, dispatcher Andrew Scroggins received a call from a woman about 8
miles away who feared she was suffering a stroke.
Closely following a procedural script, Scroggins asked
the woman on the other end about her symptoms and instructed her on what
to do as MCHD paramedics made their way to her home in The Woodlands.

In her long career as an EMS dispatcher in Halton and Peel, Laura Grant “has touched innumerable lives,” according to her family.
Those people, and hundreds more of Grant’s family members,
friends and colleagues, are expected today (Sept. 6) as a celebration of
life will be held for the 57-year-old Burlington mother of two and
grandmother of one.

The decision to change the way
the 911 center is funded was precipitated by an “untenable financial
situation” according to Commissioner Andy Kostielney, who serves as
president of the three member executive board for the 911 center. The
other two members are Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood and South Bend Mayor
Pete Buttigieg.
The
argument over how to fund the 911 center dates back more than five years
ago, when a new state law required counties to have no more than two
Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP). In 2014, South Bend, Mishawaka
and St. Joseph County entered into an interlocal agreement that split
the cost of the consolidated center.

FORT SMITH, Ark. (KFSM) — At the end of August dramatic 911 audio
of a Fort Smith woman who died in flash flooding was released. Now
another woman is coming forward, saying her fate could have been the
same.
Janet Smith says she can’t stop thinking about what she calls a
near-death experience on August 24, the same day Debbie Stevens died
when her car was swept away by flash floods while delivering newspapers.
