GREGG COUNTY, Texas — The Text 9-1-1 service is now available in several East Texas counties, allowing residents to send a text message for emergency assistance when they cannot make a voice call.
The service, which was spearheaded by the East Texas Council of Governments (ETCOG), is available in the following counties:
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Regional Health hosted its second First Responder Appreciation Event Saturday morning at Memorial Park.
The event was open to the public, and attendees were able to take part in an obstacle course, see a search and rescue demonstration and learn about first responders.
The hardest calls are the ones with kids. Or maybe the searches that stretch from hours into days. Or ones with a more personal connection, like when the unresponsive male is the same age as your neighbor’s son, or it’s happening on the street you grew up on.
When Summit County dispatchers pick up a 911 call, they don’t know what’s going to be on the other end of the line. It could be the lady who calls once a week asking for the number for the library. Or a man overcome with emotion at seeing a pregnant squirrel that’s just been hit by a car — send units immediately.
“The fact that we can see that we’ve saved so many lives, seeing it grow, it’s very fulfilling,” she said. “We feel good walking in here in the morning.”

ALBANY — Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced $10 million in grant funding Friday to strengthen local emergency response operations across the state through improvements to 911 response and emergency service dispatch operations. The funding is administered by the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services through the Public Safety Answering Points Operations Grant.
