The temperament of an individual calling 911 is important for dispatchers, because the quicker they receive accurate information, the sooner help will arrive.
At the St. Joseph Police Department, the dispatchers receive a variety of calls. Some are people speaking calmly, others are in hysterics.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN/WJHL) – On this anniversary of 9/11, the heroism and sacrifice of Tennessee first responders was honored in Nashville on Wednesday.
Among them was Bristol Police Department dispatcher Jessica Donihe, who helped police officers locate a woman in distress by persistently calling the woman’s cell phone after the first call lost connection. The woman had hanged herself, but officers arrived in time to cut her free and get medical attention for her, saving her life.
Wireless carriers continue to lobby the FCC through the CTIA trade association on indoor location accuracy requirements, pushing for phased-in ±3-meter Z-axis accuracy requirements and pointing out challenges with the National Emergency Address Database (NEAD), which would provide dispatchable locations to 9-1-1 centers.
Jersey City – Mayor Steven M. Fulop and the City Council have approved construction for the Public Safety building at Jackson Square; centralizing public safety services and resources in Jersey City. For the first time, the headquarters will exist to include all public safety offices, including the police and fire departments, parking enforcement, and 9-1-1 dispatch operations.
“Since day one, this administration has been committed to enhancing public safety from every angle, and having these resources and personnel under one roof will further improve and streamline operations, including increased emergency response times, ultimately contributing to our ongoing efforts towards decreasing crime,” said Mayor Fulop. “Additionally, Jackson Square continues to revitalize the Bergen-Lafayette neighborhood.
A Waynesville native has been hired as the new E9-1-1 director for Piatt County, a position that has been empty since the retirement of Jim Cripe on June 28.
Tim Furman, 26, was unanimously approved by the county board on Wednesday morning, and will start Sept. 26. The 2011 Olympia High School graduate has worked in emergency services in various capacities, including his most recent role as a CenCom dispatcher in DeWitt County. He is also the EMS captain for the Waynesville Fire Protection District.
