ST PAUL, Minnesota — As chaos unfolded outside the Minnesota State
Fair on the final night, Chad Keller calmly worked inside the Ramsey
County Communications Center.
Keller answered the 911 call from the driver who hit a woman he said jumped out in front of him.
Keller could hear the crowd surrounding the driver’s car.
“When
I answered, just a lot of people. As the call went on, it sounded more
like yelling. It got louder. Did it sound hostile? It did,” Keller said.
According to the 911 transcript, the caller said: “There’s a huge crowd. They’re kickin’ my car.”

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — You may start to notice some changes when it comes to calling 911 in the Birmingham.
Right
now, there are an average of six to eight dispatchers working at a
time. Those workers do a great job, but can sometimes get overloaded.
When that happens, a call gets placed on cue, meaning the system places
it on hold until the next operator is available.
City officials say this delay will be a thing of the past thanks to changes coming to fruition.

LUMBERTON, NC (WBTW) – The City of Lumberton has issued a statement
after a video surfaced online of two 911 dispatchers mocking the deaf.
“The City of Lumberton would like to state publicly that it in no way
endorsed or approved the unfortunate video which was created by two of
our 911 dispatchers depicting someone using sign language, and which
appeared on one of their personal Facebook pages. In fact, the City
very much disapproves of the video.” The city said in a statement.
The city says the matter is being handled administratively and that
training from the NC Division of Services for the Deaf and Hard of
Hearing will be required of all employees in the department. The City
cays this is to prevent a recurrence of this type of activity and to
provide greater awareness.

MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. — It’s one of the most important jobs there is when it comes to people who need help.
Dispatches
are often the unsung heroes who work behind the scenes in an emergency.
They’re the ones who talk to people who call 911and get the right
emergency responders to the scene.
‘We can console them
and get them calmed down before a deputy even gets to their house,” said
David Marsh, who has worked as a dispatcher in Manatee County for more
than 20 years.

Shawnee Telecommunicator, Robert Conley, was recognized during the
State 911 Authority Meeting as the Telecommunicator of the Quarter for
the State of Oklahoma at the State Capitol Friday, Sept. 6.
Conley is the third recipient of this award and was nominated for his dedicated service to the responders and citizens.
For three years Conley has worked for the Shawnee police department.

WILKES-BARRE — A plan to borrow tens of millions of dollars to pay for
upgrades to the Luzerne County 911 communication system will come before
county council this month.
The plan will be discussed Tuesday at a council work session, and could
be on council’s voting agenda in two weeks, according to county Manager
David Pedri.
Representatives of Public Financial Management, the county’s financial
consultant, will take part in the work session via phone, Pedri said.
They and council members will discuss options PFM has explored for the
long-planned borrowing, he said.
County leaders have said for years the borrowing would be needed to pay
for a digital communication system for the county 911 communications
center.
