While 911 dispatchers serve as the first step in providing oftentimes life-saving care to those in need, they are rarely the ones recognized for the effort. Flagstaff Academy students wanted to change that.
Thursday afternoon, teachers Kate Sloop and Terri Reh delivered to the police department 15 baskets of garden produce and herbs, cultivated by Flagstaff’s middle school students. The fruits and vegetables were picked from students’ home gardens, donated by local supermarkets and collected from the middle school’s greenhouse.
Fifteen more baskets also were donated Thursday to 911 dispatchers at the Lafayette Police Department.

TUPELO, Miss. — People know Facebook can be used to find old friends. It can also help find people in dire straits.
That was the case recently when Lee County authorities were
searching in vain for a woman in the midst of a medical emergency in
the middle of the night. When all other options were exhausted, the
social media giant called with the woman’s exact coordinates.
Lee County 911 director Paul Harkins said his office first got a call
from the woman’s mother around 11:30 p.m. The daughter was having a
medical emergency but they could not locate her.

An Eagan family escaped carbon monoxide poisoning after their detector went off one night around 1:30 a.m. The Florida-based dispatcher that called to warn them flew to the Twin Cities this week to meet the family she helped save.
The Klassens, including Andy, Melanie, their three daughters and their dog, narrowly avoided carbon monoxide poisoning after a hot water heater pipe malfunctioned on Aug. 5. Reneshia Cason, the ADT dispatcher, called emergency services to send crews to the house; and she called the family to tell them to get outside.
“I can’t see how we would have survived that without those people that were there,” said Melanie Klassen. “Everybody was in shock.”

STRASBURG, Colo. — An Aurora dispatcher is getting help from two
communities and the first responders she works with after tragedy
literally struck over the weekend. While she was at work, lightning hit
her house, starting a fire.
Despite the stress, Paula Hull went back to work Wednesday night for the City of Aurora.

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) — Sometimes, the phones at the Floyd County 911 Communications Center ring almost nonstop.
Sheriff
Frank Loop’s dispatch center isn’t just responsible for calls where his
deputies are dispatched. It also dispatches four fire departments, a
police department and emergency medical services.
“We average about 55,000 calls a year,” Loop said.
Right now,
the sheriff is a bit concerned about keeping up, because four of the
county’s dispatcher positions are vacant — almost a third of all
dispatch positions at the center. The problem? Loop said it’s hard to
attract qualified applicants with a pay scale of $36,000.
