The Garland County Quorum Court Human Resources Committee created eight new public safety positions at its Sept. 27 meeting, personnel slots the sheriff’s department and 911 Communications Center said are needed to meet a growing workload.
The committee authorized six new deputy positions in the sheriff’s department’s enforcement division, a number matching what the county applied for through the Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services grant.
In July, the quorum court authorized the county to apply for the grant, which, if awarded in full, would partially fund salaries and benefits for up to six deputies for three years. The grant requires the new hires be retained for at least one year after the grant funding ends…
SCHENECTADY COUNTY – The county will use a $608,673 state grant to improve its emergency communications, the state announced this week.
The grant money will be used for Schenectady County’s commitment to an $18 million countywide radio operability project to modernize its public safety network communication equipment, county spokeswoman Erin Roberts said.
The project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2022, Roberts said, includes:
A tower system
Base units at fire houses and stations
Portable and vehicle radios for police and fire units…
(FOX 5 DC) – When there’s an emergency, every second matters. However, some in the DMV feel that sense of urgency is missing due to an ongoing problem of 911 call mix-ups.
Time is of the essence when someone needs help. That’s why a viewer reached out to FOX 5 to investigate the ongoing issues with 911 calls in the DC region being routed to the wrong jurisdiction.

A woman called 911 and was first routed to Prince George’s County, then they forwarded her to the city of Alexandria, then the emergency call went to Fairfax County…
HANCOCK COUNTY — They hear worst-case scenarios and then must make on-the-spot and — in some instances — a life saving-decision.
The work a 911 dispatcher does is nonstop and intense. Helping others during some of life’s worst experiences can bring great satisfaction when all ends well. Still, there are other times that can be heartbreaking, like listening to a person take their last breath when they’ve called for help.
“Those are the kinds of situations that create mental images and stay with you,” said Jason Haddix, a county dispatcher.
Haddix, 44, Greenfield, has been a dispatcher for the Hancock County 911 Center since March 2016. He’s one of over 20 operators who work behind the scenes every day taking calls for all kinds of emergency situations…
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Right now, across the nation, 911 dispatch centers are seeing 15-20 percent shortages in employees. And Western North Carolina has not been immune to the deficits hitting other departments.
Right now, Buncombe County has a 6.3 percent staff shortage.
“Our 911 center has also seen an increase in call volume, much like 911 centers across the nation,” Buncombe County Emergency Services director Taylor Jones said…
