Rath, Hawley call on Albany to release 9-1-1 funding

Today, Senator Rath called on the Department of Budget (DOB) to release critical funding grants for emergency services. Senator Rath was joined by Assemblyman Steve Hawley, Genesee County Legislature Chair Rochelle Stein, Undersheriff Brad Mazur, Genesee County Director of Emergency Communications Steven Sharpe, Members of the Genesee County Legislature and Members of the 911 Advisory Board.

“The delay in the release of this funding for our communities is extremely damaging.  As ranking member on the Senate Local Government’s Committee, I know the extreme duress many of our counties are under as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.  For the State to be delaying the release of this funding, with no end in sight, is completely unacceptable.  We need to be working with our counties and local governments, not adding unnecessary burdens.  Unfortunately, this seems to be all too typical for our State.  I am calling on the Department of Budget to release these grants (2020-21) and inform our counties when they will be able to apply for the current fiscal year’s grants (2021-22),” said Senator Ed Rath…

Durham budget proposal includes 2-cent property tax hike, $9 million more in public safety funding (NC)

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) – The budget recommended for the City of Durham would include a 2-cent raise in the property tax rate — most of which would go toward an affordable housing bond voters passed in 2019, a news release said Monday.

‘We are right there’: Minnesota Legislature on the cusp of a budget agreement, leaders say

ST. PAUL — Minnesota legislative leaders burned the midnight oil and were poised to release state budget targets Monday, May 17, the officials said early in the day.

After a week and a half of closed-door talks, Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka, R-East Gull Lake, and House Speaker Melissa Hortman, D-Brooklyn Park, said they were “at a place of signing the dotted line” on budget targets. The targets determine how much Minnesota will spend on schools, roads and bridges, public safety and other areas of state government.

Without those numbers, the Legislature slowed to a standstill over the weekend and lawmakers braced for a special session to complete a nearly $52 billion state budget, a police reform package and a plan to erase income taxes on Paycheck Protection Program loans and some unemployment insurance funds…

Early hang-up calls are a common problem for Buchanan County dispatchers, something that can make the process more difficult for emergency responders.

Sometimes callers hang up out of frustration or thinking it will lead to a faster response time, Melody Reese, a Buchanan County emergency medical dispatcher, said. But it’s important to stay on the line so dispatchers know if a situation changes.

“Your call may have started with chest pain and now, a minute into the call, that patient’s gone unresponsive,” she said. “We want to know that so we can update the crew… READ MORE
