Did you know the Aventura Police Department’s 9-1-1 Communications Section is 1 of 7 Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) in Miami-Dade County? In 2020, the Aventura Police Department’s team of 14 Police Communications Officers (PCO) processed over 90,000 phone calls, out of which 11,200 of those were 9-1-1 calls for service.
APD’s Communications Officers are the first point of contact for people in desperate need of help. In fact, 9-1-1 Dispatchers are often referred to as the first “First Responders.” A lot of time goes into training these amazing men and women. The State of Florida Department of Health requires all PSAP Operators to become certified 9-1-1 Telecommunicators. There are numerous certifications the operators must obtain, including the Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certification. The EMD Certification allows the Telecommunicator to provide life-saving and pre-arrival instructions to callers with medical emergencies. 9-1-1 professionals choosing to expand their career opportunities may also be certified as Emergency Number Professionals (ENP) or Certified Public-Safety Executives (CPE). SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah couple welcomed their fourth child into the world on the side of Interstate 15, coached through delivery problems by a 911 operator.
Dispatcher William Kalaher was new to the job and had only been taking solo calls for two weeks when he answered the call from the Eagle Mountain couple around 1 a.m. Friday, KUTV-TV reported.

WIVB) — New York State is dishing out $10 million to 911 centers across New York State. Local counties are slated to receive $1.2 million of that pie.
The money is coming in the form of a grant from the NYS Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services. It’s intended to help localities in 57 counties and New York City improve 911 public safety answering, dispatch operations.
Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office says the grant will help offset day-to-day expenses and encourage investments into new technology like text-to-9-1-1 messaging, data communication and improved geo-location for emergency response… READ MORE

Orleans Parish Communications District (OPCD), one of the largest 911 centers in the U.S., will replace its existing call-handling system with APEX, the cloud-native call-management platform from Carbyne to integrate many next-generation 911 (NG911) capabilities within the normal call-flow process, according to an OPCD official.
OPCD Executive Director Tyrell Morris said the New Orleans-area 911 center has been using an over-the-top, cloud-based Carbyne product to augment the voice-centric call-taking system with multimedia functionality, but the APEX platform also will handle emergency voice calls…

The City Council and the viewing audience recently heard about a proposed public safety app that would enable residents to use their cell phones to keep track of the police department’s reports of incidents and to quickly communicate with the police.
During the June 2 council budget work session, Assistant to the City Manager for Budget and Evaluation Kenneth Hunter gave a presentation and he used the MyCMPD app as an example.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department in November 2020 launched the MyCMPD app so users can be alerted of incidents as they occur in areas and neighborhoods close to their homes, schools or workplaces and so users can view an online map to see the locations of police activity and emergencies in areas and neighborhoods…

The Prince William County Department of Public Safety Communications has implemented a new alarm response program designed to improve 9-1-1 response time, minimize duplicate data entry and possible errors, and reduce unnecessary calls between alarm companies and the department.
The new program, called Automated Secure Alarm Protocol, or ASAP, connects 9-1-1 centers that are known as Public Safety Answering Points (PSAP) because they receive calls from the public as well as transfers from alarm companies.
