The next generation of 9-1-1 (Canada)

Phone technology has evolved at an incredible pace, from the first cellphone in the 1980s, to the sophisticated computers we call smartphones in our pockets now. But some of the most important calls we make are to 9-1-1 in an emergency. And the system that 9-1-1 centres run hasn’t kept up.

The Globe’s telecom reporter Alexandra Posadzki tells us that there’s a move to introduce “next-generation 9-1-1” Canada-wide through the hundreds of organizations that handle our calls for help. That would allow callers to send photos or text messages, and help authorities better pinpoint where calls on cellphones are coming from… READ MORE

Commission approves $126M in borrowing for North Carolina municipalities

(The Center Square) – North Carolina’s Local Government Commission (LGC) approved more than $126 million in financing for government buildings in six municipalities Tuesday.

The county will build a 360-bed detention facility, a 911 communications center and a magistrate’s office. County officials said the current facility only has the capacity to hold 125 beds. Surry will build the jail with the capacity to expand up to 450 beds. It has spent $750,000 a year to house inmates out of the county as a result. As is, the communications center is also below capacity, they said… READ MORE

New upgrade to 9-1-1 system could save lives (OH)

New upgrade to 9-1-1 system could save lives (OH)

GUERNSEY COUNTY, Ohio (WTRF) – If a picture is worth a thousand words, an upgrade to Guernsey County’s 911 system is priceless.

The Carbyne-C Live system allows the dispatcher to see the scene of the emergency as well as hear the caller’s voice. If the caller is on a cell phone, the dispatcher texts them a link. The caller touches the link and that creates a video feed. It’s technology that will literally save lives.

On Tuesday, a semi went up on flames on I-70. “It was a car carrier,” said Jeff Hannon, Guernsey County dispatch coordinator. “So we got two calls with video of that. We could see the semi fully engulfed with the four or five vehicles on the back, also fully engulfed…

Hanover moves its dispatching to regional center in Duxbury (MA)

HANOVER — After two years of planning, state officials threw the switch and sent all 911 calls from the Hanover police department to the regional dispatch center in Duxbury.

Thirty minutes later, on June 30, the Hanover Fire Department was answering multiple calls.

“They didn’t miss a beat,” Regional Old Colony Communications Center Director Mike Mahoney said. “If we hadn’t told anyone, no one would be the wiser.”

The move to the Duxbury-based regional dispatch center will bring significant savings to Hanover over the next five years. The state will pay for its share of the operating costs, Mahoney said. The center also serves Halifax, Hanson, Plympton and Rochester… READ MORE
