‘Led to a great outcome’: Fairfield first responders honored for saving resident’s life (CT)

FAIRFIELD — Several first responders were recently honored for their quick actions that officials say saved a resident’s life this summer.

Lt. Patrick Barry, officer Felix Gonzalez, firefighter Justin Crawford, telecommunicator Lynn Erazmus telecommunicator Jennifer DiJoseph and firefighter Ed Walsh were presented a special Hartford Health challenge coin for their response during the emergency.

“This is one of those things where you know if one of those little pieces of the puzzle is missing, like someone doesn’t call right away or the dispatcher doesn’t get the right information there could have been an issue,” Fairfield Fire Department Deputy Chief Kyran Dunn said…

Opinion: America’s aging 911 infrastructure needs a ‘medic’ but there is hope

A dispatcher works at the 911 center at the Pickaway County Sheriff's office in Circleville.

When the first 911 call was made in February 1968, few imagined that our nation’s 911 system would bloom into nearly 6,000 local, state, and regional 911 centers across the country answering 650,000 daily emergency calls.

Now, despite its success in saving countless lives over the past 50 years, 911 is facing its own emergency.

Westbrook emergency radio system upgrade does away with dead spots (ME)

A radio connection upgrade has eliminated between six and eight dead areas in Westbrook where portable public safety radios didn’t work.

“We had a lot of dead spots in the city. It made it very difficult for officers, as their transmissions were often garbled in these areas, and you did not know if they were in trouble or had routine radio traffic,” Police Capt. Steve Goldberg said. “Officers on the scene could not communicate with each other, even if they were on the same property. Officers definitely felt unsafe.”

Emergency radio communications are carried out by five radio towers that are connected by fiber links, according to Public Safety Communications Director Greg Hamilton. With upgrades to the links, public safety personnel now are seeing improved communication and no more dead spots where their hip radios couldn’t receive or send messages…
