A Tulsa 911 supervisor was killed in a hit-and-run crash Tuesday night, police reported.
Mary Byers, who for 26 years served the community as a 911 call taker, dispatcher and supervisor, was killed at Admiral Boulevard and Utica Avenue, police said.
Details about the crash were not immediately available, but police said the man alleged to have hit her, 27-year-old Cody Carrell, has turned himself in.
Byers began her career as a 911 dispatcher on Aug. 30, 1995, and was promoted to 911 supervisor in November 2017, police wrote in a social media post. SACRAMENTO, CA – “There’s somebody trying to break into my house, it looks like one person, please send someone,” said a frantic Sacramento County resident during a recent 911 call.
Every year, more than 850,000 calls are made to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, where dispatchers work 10-hour shifts four days a week at the call center.

Last week was the first live IWCE conference since 2019. Meanwhile, on the last day of September, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted 4-0 in favor of moving forward with the Eighth Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for 4.9-GHz spectrum.
One large Land Mobile Radio (LMR) vendor wants to solve the Push-To-Talk (PTT) interoperability issue for FirstNet/LTE/LMR using its Critical Connect cloud service. However, a much smaller company provides push-to-talk interoperability that is available today. This solution is an example of how we can reach the goal of nationwide push-to-talk interoperability on FirstNet/LTE systems and integrate broadband PTT with LMR PTT services.

Mary Byers Death -Obituary : Long-time Tulsa police dispatcher, Mary Byers has passed away following injuries incurred in a two-vehicle accident that happened on Tuesday, October 5, 2021 around 9:15 p.m. at the intersection of Admiral and Utica.
According to authorities, Mary was on her way to work the graveyard shift when a car driven by Carrel Cody at high rate of speed ran red light and crashed into Mary’s car leaving her with life threatening injuries to which she died at the scene of the crash.
Cody, on the other hand fled the scene without stopping to give assistance to the Mary and his injured girl friend. He later came back after 12 hours and has since been arrested…

Dispatchers and call-takers for 911 are on the front lines for people facing dire emergencies, and they are trained to not only remain calm, but to keep the caller calm as well.
Cherokee County’s 911 system operations center houses three agencies: Northeastern Health System EMS, Cherokee Nation EMS, and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. The center also handles all fire and EMS calls in both city and county, to dispatch the appropriate responders.
