Olympia resident David White’s blood pressure spikes. He calls 911, but hears only a busy signal. His wife rushes him to the hospital in a family truck. He eventually receives medical attention, but the delay and lack of immediate EMT treatment leaves him with lasting illness: kidney disease, glaucoma, migraines and vertigo.

On Dec. 9, King County’s emergency 911 dispatch experienced a service disruption between the hours of 3:15 p.m. and 4:10 p.m. The 911 outage affected emergency services in Seattle, Bellevue, as well as county-wide agencies from Snohomish, Kitsap, Clallam, Jefferson, Whatcom and Skagit…

Alachua County Combined Communication Center workers prepare to work through Christmas (FL)

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) – As many places look to close their doors and send workers home on Christmas Eve and Christmas the phones still need to be manned at the Alachua Combine Communications Center.

Telecommunicators work in shifts 24-hours a day, seven days a week to make sure that all 9-1-1 calls are serviced and the building will be fully staffed for the holidays. Jeanette Whitworth has worked at the center for nearly four years and she says that holiday shifts are typically slow.

“It’s a little bit lighter. the holidays can bring some negativity to people and it makes it tougher for other to endure the holidays so we have that aspect to deal with and those type of calls to deal with. County to discuss terminating dispatch agreement with Oelwein (IA)

Terminating the emergency services dispatch agreement between Fayette County and the city of Oelwein will be up for discussion and possibly a vote at Monday’s Board of Supervisors meeting.

The board’s meeting agenda was released to the public on Tuesday morning this holiday week — it’s generally sent out on Friday. The agenda includes the item “Possible approval of termination of dispatch agreement between Fayette County and the city of Oelwein.”

The meeting begins at 9 a.m. in the second floor of the courthouse in West Union…

County emergency dispatch earns re-accreditation (FL)

 

Lake County and the Office of Public Safety Support have been approved for re-accreditation as an Accredited Center of Excellence for emergency dispatching.

The re-accreditation is awarded by the International Academies of Emergency Dispatch (IAED) and is effective for three years. 

“This distinction reflects the dedication of staff in meeting the highest standards of care and practice available for emergency dispatch centers. To receive this re-accreditation, an organization must demonstrate strong local oversight, rigorous quality processes, and a commitment to data-driven, continuous improvements,” according to a Lake County news release…

A call comes in about a man with a gun.

“He’s got it on his person?” he calmly asks the caller. “Handgun or long gun? Do you happen to know what caliber by chance? I’ll update the officer. We’ve got one on the way.”

Allison contacts law enforcement en route with valuable – and perhaps life-saving – information.

Bloomington telecommunicator honored with two Life-Saving awards (IL)

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (WMBD) — A telecommunicator for the city of Bloomington had a busy week helping save lives in the community.

Amanda Richmond’s efforts earned her two Life-Saving awards.

The first award was for a situation that involved a drowned child. Leaders with the city say her calm demeanor helped her give CPR instructions over the phone. Richmond was also able to quickly direct first responders to the scene, where the child survived… READ MORE
