New service in Edmonson County allows texts to 9-1-1
BROWNSVILLE, Ky. — (WBKO) Edmonson County is now giving people the opportunity to text 9-1-1.
It’s a program that has been live since June and they have been working out the kinks.
Officials have discovered that older phones work better with the technology. The only major downside? GPS technology is still more accurate with calls to 9-1-1 rather than texts.
Dismissed Vigo County 9-1-1 director hired as Knox County interim E 9-1-1 director
KNOX COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) – Knox County E 911 has a new interim director.
The Knox County Commissioners hired Rob McMullen.
News 10 talked with Commissioner President Kellie Streeter.
She said there was an executive decision to find a new director.
Streeter told us it’s in an effort to take county dispatch in a new, more efficient direction.
We reported earlier this year, Vigo County dismissed McMullen as the county’s 911 director.
Streeter said she was not concerned about that action.
She also said McMullen brings expertise and experience to the job.
Advocacy group starts new program to help police, dispatchers with hidden hazards of the job
The OPBA began the mental health assistance program earlier this month.
CLEVELAND — The program allows OPBA members to confidentially request mental health-related services. Marriage or financial counseling assistance is also included in the program. The OPBA launched the program for two main reasons: officers, dispatchers and correctional officers may be skeptical or worry that seeking help may result in retribution by a superior and the growing number of law enforcement officers committing suicide each year.
York County 911 dispatcher union cautiously optimistic about privatizing
Poor staff retention, over-reliance on overtime hours and other management woes have plagued the 911 center for years.
A recent audit by New Jersey-based IXP Corp. stated that current management is not up to the task of implementing the necessary changes to turn things around at the 911 center, so the company recommended bringing in outside help and offered its own management services.
State police dispatcher honored, helped Malta mother deliver baby on Thruway
ALBANY — A state police dispatcher received praise this week after she helped a Malta mother in labor give birth off Interstate 90.
The dispatcher, Troop G Communications Specialist Kim Carballo, took the call, dispatched the necessary first responders and then talked the mother through the birth, state police said on their statewide Facebook page Tuesday.
The came in at 3:51 a.m. May 8, state police said. The woman was in labor and about to give birth in her vehicle on the side of Interstate 90.
Carballo then used her training in emergency medical dispatch to talk the woman through the birth, state police said.
