TOLEDO, Ohio — A push is underway by the city of Toledo and the United Way to make sure you get the resources you need.
The
long-term goal is for people to think of 2-1-1, the United Way hotline
number, as a resource to call besides 9-1-1 if they are dealing with a
non-emergency crisis and need help.
“The expansion of 2-1-1 is
going to decrease the pressure on 9-1-1 services. 9-1-1 calls become
very expensive,” Toledo Director of Neighborhoods and Business
Development Amy Sackman Odum said.

The director of Lexington’s enhanced 911 emergency call program outlined staffing issues to a city council committee this week. Emergency calls for help have increased significantly over the past two decades.
Enhanced 911 Director Robert Stack said there are currently 10
vacancies in a 75 person department. Dspite the staffing issues, he
noted more than 98% of emergency calls are answered within ten seconds.
But Stack said growing cell phone usage is creating challenges.

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Richmond Emergency Communications
Department takes hundreds of 911 calls from around the city each day. On
Wednesday, 8News got a behind the scenes look as trainees go through a
10-week academy to become 911 dispatchers.
The department takes more than 1,200 emergency calls every day and
nearly 450,000 calls a year. The trainees remained cool, calm and
collected while taking their first real emergency calls.
