HAMLIN – The Lincoln County Commission has given its backing to a move to have 911 telecommunicators recognized and designated as first responders. The Santa Maria police and fire departments have completed a multiyear project to upgrade their public safety dispatch system that city officials say will improve response times and allow emergency responders to communicate more efficiently.
The upgrades — the result of a 2016 contract between the city and Motorola — include new computer-aided-dispatch workstations, fitting patrol vehicles and fire engines with mobile data computers along with setting up in-car mobile radios and hand-held radios.
