Cole County launches interactive 911 program

JEFFERSON CITY – Residents of Cole County now have a way to provide more information to first responders before an emergency happens.

The app, Smart911, allows people to create a “safety profile,” so when they call 911 their information will be readily available to emergency services.

According to an April report from the Missouri Department of Public Safety, 70 percent of 911 calls are made from a cell phone. The report said counties often can’t locate calls made from cell phones because of the cost involved.

Bill Farr, the Emergency Management Director for Cole County, said this program will help those odds.

Communications center takes 2,000+ inadvertent 911 calls

WAUKESHA, Wis. —

The Waukesha County Communications Center is issuing a warning after receiving more than 2,000 inadvertent 911 calls last month.

The agency is asking residents to be more cautious about dialing 911.

“It takes resources away from people who really need the 911,” Waukesha County resident John Dahms said.

Director Gary Bell said it’s a growing problem, as the staff has to make sure each misdialed call really is a mistake.

Putnam’s Heather Fox is Dispatcher of the Year

CARMEL – Putnam County 911 Dispatcher Heather Fox has assisted scores of people in need during her 15-year career as a dispatcher at both the county’s call-in center in Carmel and for 10 years prior in Dutchess County.

“Helping others has been my credo throughout my lifetime,” said Fox during an interview after the public servant learned she has been named as Dispatcher of the Year by the Association of Public Safety Communication Officials (APCO) and will be recognized in November at a banquet in Boston.

911 Services getting an upgrade?

GREAT FALLS – Tuesday is the regularly scheduled City Commission meeting in Great Falls, but this week, a new grant is on the table to upgrade 911 services.

It’s called the Montana Land Information Act Grant and it’s for over $13,000.

The city is preparing to move forward into a system called Next Generation 911 or N.G. 911.

This new program will improve data-keeping and data accuracy.
