Mental health first responders replace police for some 911 calls in Albuquerque (NM)

ALBUQUERQUE — Elisha Lucero was known in her family as a painter, a fisherwoman and a caretaker who had put aside her ambitions to nurse relatives through bouts of poor health.

She was also gripped by mental illness, and on a summer’s night in 2019, the 28-year-old was behaving so erratically that a cousin called 911 from their suburban Albuquerque home. The large increase in calls, Swisher said, came from Interstate 81, a hot topic among officials throughout the county. In 2019-20, there were 4,898 calls processed for the interstate with 6,164 calls for 2020-21. That equates to approximately 17 calls a day…

The free app divides the world into three-metre squares and assigns each with a unique combination of three random words, which allows first responders to pinpoint the exact location of an emergency.
