The second week is of April is annually recognized as National Telecommunications Officer Week. It is a time to honor the hard working and committed individuals that have chosen emergency communications as their profession. My appreciation for their work is not reserved for just that single week, so I wanted to share a brief story that recently came to my attention.
Our communication officers have an irreplaceable responsibility to answer calls for help from our citizens during the most trying of circumstances. This transpires around-the-clock while many of us are asleep at night or enjoying free time on weekends and holidays. On Wednesday, Jan. 13, the Arlington County Emergency Communications Center (ECC) became one of the first centers in the nation to implement capabilities that allow fire and emergency medical services (EMS) dispatchers and supervisors to deliver critical emergency communications services no matter where they are.
Now, Arlington Fire-EMS dispatchers and supervisors are able work from a remote location, including from home. New capabilities in the 9-1-1 system allow for remote call-taking, dispatch, and supervision—breaking new ground in decentralizing and distributing public safety emergency communications…

The Green Bay Police Department (GBPD) is the main law enforcement agency for the Green Bay Packers professional football games. Although Green Bay is a city of 105,000 people, nearly 80,000 fans show up to the stadium on gamedays during normal times. At games with large crowds, officers have struggled using commercial networks to communicate.
“Prior to FirstNet, we couldn’t get text messages to our officers,” said Paul Ebel, Green Bay Police’s Investigative Commander who oversees special events, including all home Packers games. “The FirstNet devices totally outperform what we had.”

Mountain Valley Emergency Communications Center (MVECC), a regional public safety answering point serving the communities of New Providence, Summit, and Millburn, New Jersey, announces the implementation of Motorola Solutions CommandCentral Citizen Input, an application which will allow 9-1-1 callers to send pictures and video or “Incident Related Imagery” from an emergency scene to first responders through the 9-1-1 system.
