Slow fire response time irks captain of YPD (OH)

YOUNGSTOWN — A captain at the Youngstown Police Department, newly appointed to oversee its 911 center, said Lansdowne Boulevard resident Earl Minotti has reason to be upset that the response time to put out the fire that badly damaged his home early Thursday was delayed by a minute or more.

“The homeowner is legitimately upset, and they have a right to be, quite frankly. I want to get on this and figure out why this happened and how we can fix it,” Capt. Kevin Mercer said Friday…

What it’s like working 911 dispatch – WNPR : ProtectAndServe

I can verify if needed, but I was a 911 dispatcher for my local sheriff’s department for about a year and a half. My instructor made a pretty chilling point that as a call taker, you’re going to be the last person on earth to talk to some of these people, I’ve heard suicides over the phone and even worse heard people who found their loved ones after a suicide.

For me personally it was a very rewarding job and I loved the teamwork aspect of it. When there’s a major call or a pursuit happening, it’s a very crazy feeling to be in the room and listen to the communication between the call taker, the dispatcher for that frequency and the supervisor (because the supervisor is typically talking to either the patrol sergeant or the night Lieutenant)…

Staff at the Holbrook Regional Emergency Communications Center moved into their new facility in January.

This story originally appeared in the May 13 edition of the Citizen.

A few years ago, Canton Fire Chief Charles Doody’s niece dialed 911 because of an emergency with her then two-week-old daughter.

“She was choking overnight,” Doody said of the baby girl. “The dispatcher was able to provide CPR instruction over the phone to my niece’s husband, who kept her alive until we were able to arrive.” It turned out that the baby had been throwing up and had a blocked airway, which the EMTs cleared after arriving at the home…

Ventura County implements text message to 911 capabilities (CA)

Anyone in Ventura County can now reach 911 dispatchers via SMS text messages, public officials announced this week.

The change is meant to improve accessibility for residents who may have difficulty making phone calls, such as those who are deaf, hard of hearing or have speech impairments. The option to text 911 can also help people in emergency situations who are unable to make phone calls, like victims of domestic abuse.

Caroline Prijatel-Sutton, executive director of the nonprofit Coalition for Family Harmony, which provides services for victims of domestic violence in Ventura County, explained how certain crimes can prevent victims from making 911 calls…

Dorchester County learning lessons following 911 outage (SC)

“We have back up plans. We have what we refer to as continuity of operations plans to ensure that if there is a disruption that we can transfer the calls to a neighboring 911 center,” said Mario Formisano, Dorchester Interim Deputy County Administrator for Public Safety. “This case was unique because the disruption was occurring in the region, so it wasn’t just that simple to say well, we’ll send our calls to Summerville or to Charleston or to Berkeley. We had to work collectively across jurisdictional boundaries initially to come up with what the solution was going to be in the short term…

SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) – The Scioto County Sheriff has given out two awards after a citizen helped a deputy who got into a crash on his way to an emergency.

According to Scioto County Sheriff David Thoroughman, on May 15, Deputy Webster was responding to a call of shots being fired. While on his way, he was involved in a serious crash, where he went off the road and hit a tree.

Ryan Penix, who lives near the accident scene, was traveling home when he came upon the accident. He jumped into action, using Deputy Webster’s vehicle radio to call for assistance. Deputy Webster was unresponsive at first and Ryan stayed by his side making sure that he was looked after, while communicating with 9-1-1 dispatch…
