Text to 9-1-1 service coming to Macon County (IL)

MACON COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Officials with the Central Illinois Regional Dispatch Center said members of the community will soon be able to text 9-1-1.

In a news release, officials said the service will be available in Macon County starting June 1. “Text to 9-1-1 will be accessible through the four major carriers: AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, and Sprint.” If service is not available or down for a carrier, a bounce-back message will be sent back and will ask you to call.

While officials said this is a useful resource, a voice call is always preferred. “However, if it is unsafe or not possible to make a voice call, then send a text to 9-1-1,” they said…

The Missouri Chapter of the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) recently honored Angela Stiefermann, Jefferson City Police Department communications supervisor with the distinction of Chapter Life membership.

Stiefermann has been employed with JCPD since 1993 and has previously been given the Telecommunicator of the Year award for outstanding performance during a major shooting July 1, 2003, at the Modine Manufacturing Plant where three people were killed and five people were injured by a gunman. JCPD has used recordings from that night in training sessions for new dispatchers…

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — “Jeffcom 911. What is the address of your emergency?” asked a 911 call taker.

“I’m on I-70 east. A truck just blew up,” responded the caller.

massive inferno erupted on I-70 involving 24 passenger vehicles and four semi trucks in 2019.  Calls flooded into Jeffcom 911 as the accident unfolded. 

“There were well over 20 agencies that responded to that and we were able to contain all of that information,” said Michael Brewer,  Deputy Director of Jefferson County Communications Center Authority…

Penn State University Police and Public Safety will be utilizing new technology titled “FirstNet” for first responders, according to a Tuesday release. FirstNet is a communications platform dedicated to first responders and the extended public safety community.FirstNet is a communications platform dedicated to first responders and the extended public safety community. Caitlyn Bailey’s first day as a Farmington Hills dispatcher was a tad overwhelming.

The recent graduate from Wayne State University’s criminal justice program found her bearings amid the computers, monitors and workstations that comprise the city’s nerve center.
