911 Dispatch Shortage Impacts North Texas Police Departments

DALLAS (WBAP/KLIF) – Two of the largest Police Departments in North Texas are working to overcome a national shortage of 9-1-1 dispatchers.

The shortage has resulted in several delayed responses from Dallas Police. City Council woman Cara Mendelsohn said Tuesday that department leadership has taken action to implement a signing bonus for dispatchers.

“But we’ve got to do more so we have a stable staffing of professionals,” said Mendelsohn.

TUCSON (KVOA) – Tucson’s Public Safety Communications Department is undergoing a major transformation, following an outside report last year that uncovered numerous problems with staffing, morale and training.

The News 4 Tucson Investigators have also been tracking your concerns about the wait times at the city’s 9-1-1 center for the past three years.

Last year, the city had third-party access problems within the public safety communications center.

Frederick County sued over public safety radio system decision (VA)

WINCHESTER — Florida-based L3Harris Technologies Inc. is suing the Frederick County Board of Supervisors, the county government and county Finance Director Cheryl Shiffler over the board’s decision to award Texas-based EF Johnson a contract to replace the county’s public safety radio system.

L3Harris filed a complaint and request for a temporary injunction in Frederick County Circuit Court on June 14. The company wants the court to cancel the notice of intent to award the contract to EF Johnson and instead award it to L3Harris.

More than two years ago, Pennsylvania-based Mission Critical Partners assessed the county’s aging public safety radio system and identified numerous problems, such as limited capacity, no frequencies transmitted countywide and a limited number of operational channels if primary dispatch channels are overloaded. Toledo 911 dispatchers offered pay in place of vacation time
