Communication breakdown; emergency communications need an upgrade (IA)

Law enforcement surrounded a residence north of Charlotte Jan. 15. An armed man had shot a Clinton County sheriff’s deputy and injured a woman in the house. Four separate law enforcement agencies manned one side of the property. All had radios; however, they could not communicate with each other because their systems were incompatible, Jackson County Sheriff Brent Kilburg told the Jackson County Supervisors last week.

That situation is repeating itself more frequently and has the Jackson County Board of Supervisors mulling an estimated $1.2 million emergency communications upgrade. It would be only the tip of the iceberg to enhance safety for all emergency personnel and the public.

Members of the county’s 911 Service Board impressed upon the supervisors the need for a new, upgraded communications system that would — eventually — allow Jackson County deputies, police, firefighters, emergency management, and more to speak with each other via one centralized system…

It was a DIF, which means death in the field. My last radio transmission as a 9-1-1 dispatcher was ‘88th command reports death in the field,’ and it just happened to be my father.” …
