FCC Proposals Aim to Stop Robocalls at the Border, Protect 911

The FCC this week adopted two Notices of Proposed Rulemaking (NPR) in the fight against illegal robocalls. One takes aim at the networks that serve as entry points for foreign-originated robocalls and the other proposes rules to protect 911 call centers from robocalls.

Stopping foreign-originated robocalls is “one of the most vexing challenges” the FCC faces in the battle against foreign-based robocallers and the voice service providers that they use, according to a press release.

he NPR proposes that domestic networks that accept these calls apply STIR/SHAKEN caller ID authentication and perform robocall mitigation on all foreign-originated calls with U.S. numbers… READ MORE

911 mix-up: Emergency call routed to wrong jurisdiction (Washington DC)

911 mix-up: Emergency call routed to wrong jurisdiction (Washington DC)

When there’s an emergency, every second matters. However, some in the DMV feel that sense of urgency is missing due to an ongoing problem of 911 call mix-ups.

Time is of the essence when someone needs help. That’s why a viewer reached out to FOX 5 to investigate the ongoing issues with 911 calls in the DC region being routed to the wrong jurisdiction.

On Saturday, Sept. 25, 2021 around 6 p.m. at Belle Haven Marina in Fairfax County, a truck rolled into the river with three people inside – parents and their toddler. According to a witness, the truck just loaded a jet ski onto its trailer, but instead of pulling forward, the vehicle went in reverse – rolling backwards. A woman called 911 and was first routed to Prince George’s County, then they forwarded her to the city of Alexandria, then the emergency call went to Fairfax County…

County dispatcher recognized as one of the best in the state (IN)

HANCOCK COUNTY — They hear worst-case scenarios and then must make on-the-spot and — in some instances — a life saving-decision.

The work a 911 dispatcher does is nonstop and intense. Helping others during some of life’s worst experiences can bring great satisfaction when all ends well. Still, there are other times that can be heartbreaking, like listening to a person take their last breath when they’ve called for help.

“Those are the kinds of situations that create mental images and stay with you,” said Jason Haddix, a county dispatcher.

Haddix, 44, Greenfield, has been a dispatcher for the Hancock County 911 Center since March 2016. He’s one of over 20 operators who work behind the scenes every day taking calls for all kinds of emergency situations…

Right now, Buncombe County has a 6.3 percent staff shortage.

“Our 911 center has also seen an increase in call volume, much like 911 centers across the nation,” Buncombe County Emergency Services director Taylor Jones said…

Austin, Texas, police are now urging the public to call 311 instead of 911 to report non-emergencies, authorities said.
