County works toward upgrading 911 system (NE)

HARTINGTON — Cedar County’s 911 system will be getting a major upgrade later this fall.

The county is preparing for what’s known as Next Generation 911 – new technology that allows the public to share videos, images and text messages with 911 call centers. The new technology also enables 911 centers to communicate with each other. Cedar County will join five other entities to connect their 911 centers through fiber optics.

The Cedar County Commissioners signed an interlocal agreement to join Dakota, Madison, Stanton, Dixon and Knox in a fiber optic 911 network at its meeting last week. The entities were chosen to form the network because they have compatible equipment to make it happen, said Emergency Manager Kevin Garvin…

Emergency resources are just an app away despite spotty reception in Piscataquis County (ME)

The Piscataquis County Emergency Management Agency wants to see more residents use an app it launched less than a year ago for alerts and emergency planning — even though it remains difficult for some to access it.

Last month, Piscataquis County Commissions decided to dedicate American Rescue Plan Act funds to radio communications upgrades for the county’s emergency responders rather than invest them in broadband. Although the commissioners’ decision and the EMA’s attempt to grow its app appear to conflict, the Piscataquis Emergency Management App is meant to reach an audience that doesn’t receive traditional emergency alerts broadcast via television and radio, Director Jaeme Duggan said…

Man charged in RCMP investigation into hundreds of non-emergency 911 calls (Canada)

From last November through this month, hundreds of calls were made to Saskatchewan’s 911 dispatch centre, all made from an unregistered cell phone. RCMP say the caller didn’t identify themselves, nor did they indicate any emergency. A news release from the Saskatchewan RCMP says 911 dispatchers and police treat all calls seriously and have to ensure there is no emergency at the other end of the line, even if no one speaks during the call or hangs up. Officers repeatedly check the area where the calls were being place, but couldn’t find evidence of any emergency…
