Fayette County allocated American Rescue Plan funds for emergency dispatch radio system (IA)

Fayette County hopes to use American Rescue Plan funds and grant money to upgrade the radio system used by the sheriff to dispatch emergency services.

The Board of Supervisors and the Fayette County E911 Commission met in joint session at the courthouse last week to advance the radio system issue that has been discussed for more than a year.

According to meeting minutes, the supervisors voted unanimously to conditionally allocate $2.85 million of the county’s American Rescue Plan funds to transition from the current radio system to Iowa Statewide Interoperable Communications System. A few decades ago, government security managers were tasked with overseeing physical features like fencing, CCTV cameras, doors and locks. Today, security stretches far beyond brick and mortar infrastructure—into the digital realm. With the meteoric rise in ransomware and cybercriminals for hire in recent years, threats are omnipresent online. Many American dispatch centers and public safety organizations aren’t prepared, according to experts on the subject speaking at last week’s 2022 International Wireless Communications Expo (IWCE) in Las Vegas. 

“Public safety is one of the most under-protected infrastructures in all of North America. We all protect our phones more than we protect 9-1-1, and it should not be that way,” said Paul Hill, a cybersecurity expert from Motorola speaking on a panel about the subject moderated by Dick Tenny, of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency…

The United States adds Chinese telecommunications companies to the list of national security threats

Washington [US]March 28 (ANI): On Friday, the US added China Telecom (Americans) Corp and China Mobile International USA to its list of providers of communications equipment and services that pose a threat to national security under a 2019 law that has to intended to protect US communications networks.

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau also added Russia’s AO Kaspersky Lab to its list of communications equipment and service providers considered a threat to national security, according to the Global Times, citing the FCC press release.
It is the first time that the United States has included a Russian entity on a list dominated by Chinese telecommunications companies…

Spokane City Council Commits $6 Million To Public Safety (WA)

During today’s City Council Legislative Session, Council adopted 7-0 a resolution committing a substantial investment of at least $6,271,869 in 2022 into City of Spokane public safety vehicles. This investment includes four new fire pumper trucks totaling $3.9 million and thirty-five new police vehicles and additional support at the cost of $2,564,000 with the option of further consideration of more police vehicles later in 2022.

Council approved a 2022 budget that increased Spokane Police Department’s (SPD) year-over-year funding by approximately 6%.  In addition to SPD’s budget increase, last December Council approved a special budget ordinance to increase 2021 expenditure appropriation levels for the Fire/EMS Fund by $3.5 million to cover unexpected uniform overtime, and management needs just days before approving the City’s 2022 budget…
