Congress has set aside the second week of April as National Public Safety Telecommunicators week (April 10-16, 2022). These dedicated men and women who work 24/7/365, under sometimes incredible stress, long hours and very little recognition are highly deserving of this recognition.
Our emergency telecommunicators here in Eagle County are no different; every emergency response in our entire county is initiated through the Vail Public Safety Communications Center. In 2021, our team responded to over 27,000 911 calls. In addition, we generated 133,000 calls for service in our county, from parking complaints to cardiac arrests and the whole gamut in between…

Having to call 911 is rarely for pleasant circumstances, though Lapeer County Central Dispatch did recently take a light-hearted call from a resident in Hadley Township to report a kangaroo was hopping around the area of Green Corners Cemetery — not the typical type of call they’re used to receiving.
Sadly, yet importantly, our top-notch emergency dispatchers are trained and capable to handle all sorts of tragic incidents that require a multi-agency response — from the March 21 mobile home fire in Dryden that claimed four lives, to the Nov. 30, 2021 call for help from Oakland County authorities to send Lapeer County emergency personnel to a mass-casualty shooting at Oxford High School…
