CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The week of April 11, 2022 is National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. The name is long, but it’s all about honoring the people who dispatch police, fire, and medical services to people in need when 911 is called.
Emergency calls involve a lot of people, from the person asking for help to the first responders on the scene. Part of those responding are the emergency dispatchers who first take the call. That job isn’t just answering the phone and directing people; dispatchers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department say it’s always personal…

For National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week, WTOL 11 wanted to see first-hand what a dispatcher’s day looks like.

PRINCETON — They’re ready 24-hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year to answer emergency calls, so their hard work is being recognized during National Telecommunicators Week.
The special week, observed from April 10 to 16, is a time when the public and local businesses have recognized Mercer County’s 911 dispatchers and their work by bringing them items such as gift cards and cupcakes.
“It’s for recognition of the 911 dispatchers who answer the phone every day throughout the year,” said Brian Hopper, training officer for the Mercer 911 center. “We’re over here 365, seven days a week. It doesn’t matter, the weather. We’ve always got people here at the center to answer your phone call in your time of need…

They’re often described as the first, first responders.
This is National Public Safety Communicators Week and area officials are honouring the thousands of people who answer emergency calls, dispatch emergency crews and offer life-saving assistance.
“Call takers are specially trained to gather the critical information needed to prioritize and dispatch calls,” says Marc Picard, Manager of the North Bay Central Ambulance Communications Centre. “Not all calls come in from a residential or business address—people need assistance at their cottages, on a snowmobile trail or somewhere on the highway. Dispatchers have to be able to identify a variety of locations on a digital mapping system to be able to send assistance wherever they are…

ROUND ROCK, Texas — Local police departments are recognizing some of their own during National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, the very people who were on the line when a tornado ripped through Round Rock.
“I need you to go ahead, if you are available, go ahead and get inside a business a Walmart something like this,” said a telecommunicator on the phone with a 911 caller when the tornado touched down. “Yes, ma’am get inside and stay inside. We do have firefighters and police aware.”
They may not look familiar, but they are the voice you hear when you dial 9-1-1…
