PRINCETON — They’re ready 24-hours a day, seven days a week and 365 days a year to answer emergency calls, so their hard work is being recognized during National Telecommunicators Week.
The special week, observed from April 10 to 16, is a time when the public and local businesses have recognized Mercer County’s 911 dispatchers and their work by bringing them items such as gift cards and cupcakes.
“It’s for recognition of the 911 dispatchers who answer the phone every day throughout the year,” said Brian Hopper, training officer for the Mercer 911 center. “We’re over here 365, seven days a week. They’re often described as the first, first responders.
This is National Public Safety Communicators Week and area officials are honouring the thousands of people who answer emergency calls, dispatch emergency crews and offer life-saving assistance.
“Call takers are specially trained to gather the critical information needed to prioritize and dispatch calls,” says Marc Picard, Manager of the North Bay Central Ambulance Communications Centre. “Not all calls come in from a residential or business address—people need assistance at their cottages, on a snowmobile trail or somewhere on the highway. ROUND ROCK, Texas — Local police departments are recognizing some of their own during National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, the very people who were on the line when a tornado ripped through Round Rock.
“I need you to go ahead, if you are available, go ahead and get inside a business a Walmart something like this,” said a telecommunicator on the phone with a 911 caller when the tornado touched down. “Yes, ma’am get inside and stay inside. We do have firefighters and police aware.”

BEDFORD — Emergency Management Director Valerie Luchauer shared with the Lawrence County Board of Commissioners that the central dispatch department is going to be extremely short-staffed in the coming weeks.
“I just want to give you a scenario,” Luchauer said. “Imagine if your loved one was hurt. You were in a car accident and you called 911 and nobody answered. We are getting into a critical state. WENTWORTH — Highlights from the April 4 monthly meeting of the Rockingham County Board of Commissioners included a salute to emergency telecommunications staff for their performance during a recent fatal fire.
Emergency Services Director Rodney Cates honored the staff that operated the 911 call switchboard and pointed out their excellence in handling a highly stressful call in March involving a structure fire in which a child was trapped.
