Police, fire and ambulance services relying on the Vermont State Police to dispatch for them are looking for another option, because the state won’t be doing it for them anymore.

House Rep. Butch Shaw, R-Pittsford, said that about 10 years ago then-governor Peter Shumlin decided to consolidate state police dispatching services in Burlington and Westminster. A number of problems cropped after that, namely around staffing, he said.

FLOYD COUNTY — When Amy Popp applied to work at the Floyd County dispatch center in 2007, she didn’t expect it to become her career.

“When I applied, I had no idea — I really didn’t know what the job entailed,” she said. “I didn’t know exactly what 911 dispatchers did or were responsible for, so it was just going to be a job. I was just applying for a job.”

Rainbow City police got a raise this week, as the City Council approved a $1.50 an hour raise for personnel — just one of the public safety issues considered at the council’s recent meeting.

Mayor Joe Taylor said he, the city clerk and the interim police chief looked at salaries and found that the city’s salaries were behind a little in each position in the department.
