Florida county leads the way with a high-tech 911 system for emergency response

NAPLES, Fla. — When an emergency happens in Collier County, Florida, the 911 calls go to one of the most high-tech communications centers in the U.S., where callers can send text and video from the scene to dispatchers.

Moving to what’s known as an NG911 — or Next Generation 911 — system is a journey Sheriff Kevin Rambosk and Bob Finney, the county’s director of communication, have been on for much of the past decade.

Auburn Text-to-911 program played crucial role in saving nonverbal woman from burning home (AL)

Auburn fire and communications personnel were recognized on Friday for their actions in rescuing a woman with paraplegia from her burning home, and dispatchers said Auburn Public Safety’s Text-to-911 program played a critical role.

A dozen personnel with the Auburn Fire Department and Auburn Public Safety communications were recognized by Piedmont Columbus Regional on Friday as the First Friday Heroes for the month of July for their work in saving a woman with paraplegia from her burning home in April. Catherine Griffith was working as a public safety telecommunicator at the time and said the Text-to-911 program was needed in this particular situation because the survivor is nonverbal.

Despite widespread concerns from the leaders of county Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) across the state, Gov. Kim Reynolds has signed a budget bill — Senate File 659 — without a line item veto of a provision that authorizes the state to “request reimbursement from each joint 911 service board for reasonable costs” and requires local 911 service boards to reimburse the Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management within 30 days.
