A voice that has been on the other end of 911 in Escambia County for 30 years retired Friday afternoon.
William “Bill” Jordan has answered and dispatched thousands upon thousands of 911 calls in Escambia County.
His three decades of service was to come to an end with one last radio call. He turned to the microphone and paused. Then he turned his head way, laughed and turned back to the microphone.
“This is Escambia County Fire Rescue Communications Center,
Pensacola, Florida. The following dispatcher is out of service. 2826
(his radio number). Clear, Rescue clear at at 16:57.”
He leaned back in his chair. “Alright,” he said with a sigh. Three decades were over. So he thought.
“Squad 3 Escambia.”
“Squad 3,” Bill answered.
“Godspeed.”
He stood up, walked away and then turned to look back at the dispatch
desk. And the radio calls kept coming from fire stations across the
county.

(WTNH) — Connecticut is getting an upgrade to its 9-1-1 call centers.
Connecticut is receiving more than $1 million in federal grant funding to install “next generation 9-1-1 capabilities.”
The program will create a faster, more resilient emergency system to
boost public safety. Text messaging, image and video processing, and
advanced mapping are among the improvements.

ATLANTA (FOX 5 Atlanta) – Atlanta officials honor a group of 911 dispatchers for how they handled two high-stakes situations.
The recognition took place Friday afternoon, at the Georgia World Congress Center. The first group of dispatchers were honored for helping a 10-year-old boy, who had called 911 after his parents had died.
Organizers recognized two other dispatchers for assisting in a suicide call.
FOX 5 News talked to one of them, about how she helped the 14-year-old caller.

Director of Communications Stephen Hooke recently announced
that the Holbrook Regional Emergency Communications Center received an
additional grant from the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security
and the State 911 Department for the expansion of its regional
communications facility.
The $3 million grant will fund
the construction of the new building on the ground of the Holbrook
Public Safety Building that currently houses the HRECC.

Former Cassia County Sheriff dispatcher, Donna Hedley, has recently been
diagnosed stage 4 Brain Cancer. Donna has gone through Breast Cancer
already and a few weeks ago she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Brain Cancer.
Her family has opened a Go Fund Me account and would love any financial
aid to help her during the time that she’s getting chemo. She is unable
to drive at the moment, so she is having to find people to drive her to
her doctor’s appointments. It is hard for her family to do much for her
since they live across the country from her. Financial aid or any other
help would be greatly appreciated.

WASHINGTON –Friday, August 9, 2019, the U.S.
Department of Commerce and the U.S. Department of Transportation
announced more than $109 million in grants to 34 states and two tribal
nations as part of the 911 Grant Program, which will help 911 call
centers upgrade to Next Generation 911 capabilities.
The funding
will power basic improvements such as providing digital and IP network
capabilities to 911 emergency call centers and will assist the
implementation of advanced mapping systems that will make it easier to
identify a 911 caller’s location. NG911 will help 911 call centers
manage call overload, as call-takers will be able to transfer calls,
messages, and data between public safety answering points that are
interconnected to the IP network. The 911 Grant Program also provides
funding for training costs directly related to NG911 implementation.
