HANOVER TOWNSHIP, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) —
Luzerne County is on the receiving end of a $1 million state grant to
help pay for much-needed upgrades to its 911 radio system.
While the announcement is considered good news, it’s a drop in the
bucket considering the total cost of those upgrades. The overall project
will cost around $20 million. County officials tell Eyewitness News at
this point, every dollar counts.
“We got $1 million. $1 million more than we had yesterday. We take
these little steps to move us forward,” Luzerne County Manager Dave
Pedri said.

STRASBURG, Colo. — When a 911 call came in about a rollover crash on a
rural road in Adams County in August, dispatchers initially believed
the crash happened about 16 miles away from the actual location.
In
the call, initiated by one of the victims of the crash, he sounds
confused about where he is. He hands the phone to a woman who identified
herself as “Debbie” and witnessed the crash about a minute into the
call.
“We’re at 5401 Calhoun Byers road,” Debbie tells the Metcom
dispatcher, saying she identified the address from a mailbox of a home
along that road.

Next week, at the 23rd annual 911 Oklahoma Public Safety Conference,
two local residents are going to be recognized as heroes. Justin Beaver,
communication systems manager for the City of Shawnee, is set to
receive an award as 911 Technology Person of the Year and 13-year-old
Braydon Self of Tecumseh has been designated Child Hero.

Two weeks ago I sent a FOIA request to Greene County requesting
information related to the training/certification of County staff
working in the Greene County Emergency Communications Center (ECC). I
was not required to tell the County why I was making this request;
however, in my request I shared, “…my concern is that the GCECC has not
been minimally staffed at all times by trained dispatchers, something
not shared with Greene County residents, leaving them without the
service they deserve and putting first responders at risk due to lack of
mandated training.”

On July 4, 2018, San Juan County 911 received a report of a victim falling 40 feet down a rocky bluff on Obstruction Island and into the water. That call launched a prolonged and complex rescue that involved multiple agencies, presented numerous challenges, and recently led to the San Juan County Dispatch Team receiving the 2019 WA State Telecommunicator Team of the Year Award from the WA Chapters of the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials and the National Emergency Number Association.
