GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- It’s something most of us learn at an early age: call 9-1-1 in case of an emergency. The federal government would like to do more to recognize the value in that by changing the status of those who answer the 9-1-1 call.
The ‘9-1-1 Saves Act’ would upgrade the classification of dispatchers nationwide to “first responders ”. Currently, dispatchers fall under the classification of “administrative and support workers.”

The Northwest Territories will finally have 9-1-1 services starting Monday, November 4th. The territory has been working on getting the service since 2017. On Monday, three female fire dispatchers working for the Jefferson Parish East Bank Consolidated Fire Protection Bureau filed suit claiming an ongoing practice of gender discrimination and retaliation at the Jefferson Parish Fire Protection Bureau’s Emergency Communications Division.
