County 9-1-1 Director Paul Nave said on Friday that he plans to ask
city and county officials to pass a resolution designating 911
dispatchers as first responders.
The request is tied to a federal
bill that would redesignate 9-1-1 dispatchers from secretaries and phone
operators to first responders. If the bill pending in Congress were to
become law, that would make 911 centers eligible for federal grants
earmarked for first responders.
Currently, law enforcement, firefighters and emergency medical service personnel are considered first responders.

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah — The 911 dispatch protocol at the center of a lawsuit is causing two former dispatchers to speak out Friday.
For 21 years, Brittany Carter was on the other end of a 911 call.
“I had a dad on the phone one morning that his two-year-old wasn’t breathing. He was a twin. He ended up passing away,” Carter said. “I’m like, ‘This is taking too long.’ It was horrible.”

In September, even before the October wildfires began to ravage parts of northern and southern California, governor Gavin Newsom announced two contracts totaling nearly $2 million for developing technology to facilitate wildfire detection and emergency decision-making.
