SOUTH DAKOTA – This portable device can save a life by simply following directions. Using pictures and audio instructions it delivers a shock to a person in cardiac arrest.
On National Rural Health Day, the Helmsley Charitable Trust granted nearly $4 million for AED’s to help rural communities have better access to health care.
“We like to think your zip code doesn’t determine the quality of health care that should be an even playing field for everyone,” said Mitch Krebs of the Helmsley Charitable Trust Rural Healthcare Program.
The $3.6 million grant will purchase 1,200 new AED devices with training. The goal is to have an AED in every first responder vehicle in South Dakota.

Washington County plans to hire six
full-time 911 dispatchers, possibly by February, to help an emergency
communications staff that has logged hundreds of hours of overtime in
the past year, the dispatch center’s operations manager said.
The
county also is taking steps to help with supervisor shifts, which now
require overtime when someone is on leave, said Brian Albert, operations
manager for the 911 center.

Peel police are once again reminding the public to use 911 calls appropriately.
On Oct. 20, police’s emergency services line received a from a resident, inquiring about Peel’s “emergency ride services.”
The resident told the 911 dispatcher that she was in a taxi heading to Union Station but, that she would not make in there on time for her train’s departure.
“I don’t know how you guys work with services in terms of that
because I’m in a taxi right now but it’s not gonna get me to the station
on time.”
