The job of a dispatcher is difficult and emotionally taxing, yet they are underpaid compared to the first responders they direct to the scene.
A dispatcher, telecommunicator or call-taker is someone who works in an emergency communications center. They are often responsible for answering emergency and non-emergency phone calls, entering data into national and local crime databases and sending police, fire response, and/or emergency medical response to the scene of each call that comes in.

Four prospective projects for Washington County’s 911 system were brought before the Washington County Commission during Wednesday morning’s meeting.
Lt. Chris Chesar, chair of the Washington County 911 Technical
Advisory Committee, said he was going before the board to discuss
funding from the 911 levy to cover the cost of the four recommended
projects.
“A temporary backup dispatch center located
at the (Emergency Operations Center) here on Davis Avenue. That would be
for all three public safety access points, which includes Belpre Police
Department, Marietta Police Department and the Washington County
Sheriff’s Office,” Chesar said of the first project.

GLENPOOL, Okla. A quick trip to Starbucks to pick up coffee for dispatchers working Thanksgiving left a bad taste in the mouth of an Oklahoma police chief.
The word “Pig” was printed on the cups. ……
The Starbucks store deferred to corporate and said the matter was being looked into.

Call volumes to Winnipeg police are up — and dispatchers are struggling under the weight of lengthy queues.
Data
obtained via the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act
shows authorities responded to 55,073 priority three calls — calls
considered urgent but not emergencies — between January and September
2017.
For the same period in 2018, that figure jumped slightly to 58,163 calls.
But
by the end of September 2019, cops had dealt with 76,305 priority three
calls. That’s a roughly 38 per cent increase from 2017.
