Over-the-phone CPR training now a must for 911 operators in Rhode Island

CUMBERLAND, R.I. (WPRI) — Three years ago, Rena Fleury went into cardiac arrest at a Cumberland High School football game and died after the 911 dispatcher failed to recognize the 45-year-old needed CPR.

A new law signed ceremonially on Tuesday by Gov. Dan McKee aims to ensure that never happens again by having everyone who answers emergency calls be prepared to give potentially live-saving instructions over the phone.

House Republicans try to block 911 system funding for cities that reduce police budgets

House Republicans tried unsuccessfully on Monday to penalize communities that reduce police funding by taking away money in President Joe Biden’s proposed $3.5 trillion Build Back Better investment package intended for upgrading local 911 services.

They then claimed that by opposing the proposed amendment, Democrats were refusing to support law enforcement.

North Shore Residents Can Now Text 911 In Emergencies (WI)

BAYSIDE, WI — Residents of the North Shore will now be able to text 911 in emergencies if a call is impossible.

People who are deaf or hard of hearing, those who are unable to speak due to a medical emergency, or people who are in a situation where it would be unsafe to make a call can all now use texting to get in touch with North Shore emergency dispatchers, according to a news release from the Bayside Communications Center last week.

Branch County 911 says 3G wireless connections will start to end in 2022 (MI)

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Central Dispatch Authority is trying to get the word out that the end of 3G wireless connection is rapidly approaching.

Branch County 9-1-1/Central Dispatch Interim Director Jean Ratkowski says wireless carriers will discontinue support of 3G devices in 2022.

Older style 3G models of TracFone’s, flip phones, jitterbugs and others will start falling off networks in the near future.
