Thousands of Oklahomans call emergency services throughout the year. Most of us are familiar with the steady voice that greets us and offers reassurance and direction during a crisis – and for many, emergency dispatchers are unknown voices.

Pay increases are coming to officers and telecommunicators with the Fayetteville Police Department early next year after council members were satisfied with a presentation at their work session that showed wages in the city are below those at neighboring law enforcement agencies.
Fayetteville’s Human Resource Development Director Jerry Clipp presented the proposal to the council and recommended thatpay be increased to compete with other law enforcement agencies in the region.

Naperville residents can now text 911 in an emergency, the city’s Public Safety Answering Point announced last month.
“While we want to emphasize that calling 911 is still the fastest, most reliable way to contact us, we know that offering texting as an option is critical in so many scenarios,” Emergency Communications Manager Jillianne Chuffo said in a news release. “We’re thankful to be able to offer texting as an option for citizens who have an emergency but aren’t able to speak — either because it’s not safe or because of a disability.” … READ MORE

The Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training recently announced the graduation of its 126th Basic Telecommunications Class.
The three-week course includes emergency call handling techniques, stress management, civil liability, ethics, criminal law, overview of fire-rescue and law enforcement operations, and a number of other topics. NEW ORLEANS — Local musician David Symons was walking home from a gig at about midnight Saturday when he tried to alert police to a possible crime in progress near Elysian Fields and Claiborne Avenue.
