Once again, Flathead County voters are being asked to support a ballot measure that will tax property owners to pay for ongoing equipment upgrades at the Flathead Emergency Communications Center known as the 911 center. It’s the third such proposal in six years, and obviously the county commissioners are hoping the third time’s a charm.

Making 911 calls over something that is not an emergency in the United States of America, but the outcome was different for a senior citizen who called 911 to complain that her refrigerator had broken down.
Cheryl Nanartonis of Jensen Beach, Florida, was worried would go bad after her refrigerator broke down and she didn’t have any money to fix it. She called the emergency line and the dispatcher sent deputies to her home because they “believed she was in crisis”… READ MORE

Imagine being able to text 911 when you need help or sending a video to 911 that shows how a car accident happened. Both would be possible with Next Generation 911 (NG911). Today, most of the 911 systems in use were built using analog systems rather than digital technology. These analog systems use copper-based wire and do not allow all types of data to be transmitted. Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOC) advocates in Ottawa are calling for better training for police officers receiving 9-1-1 calls and fines for a local woman who called the emergency line on a young Black man who was just riding his bike over a park bridge.
