Gordon Graham here with Today’s Tip from Lexipol. Today’s Tip is for all my friends in public safety. I want to talk about the vital role our telecommunicators play in keeping the community and all first responders safe during our shifts.
Every day across the country, thousands and thousands of people seek immediate assistance in times of crisis by doing what? Calling 9-1-1. Our first responders also rely on telecommunicators to answer their radio calls and provide various types of assistance. These telecommunicators are real people, just like you and me, providing a calm voice on the other end of the telephone or radio every hour of the day. They are behind the scenes and truly make a difference. Every successful emergency response begins with an emergency call for service. PORTAGE COUNTY, Wis. (WAOW)– The Portage County Sheriff’s Office announced Monday that they have begun accepting text-to-9-1-1 service.
Cellphone users can now send a text of up to 140 characters to 9-1-1 in an emergency.
The sheriff’s office says the text to 9-1-1 feature should only be used in an emergency situation, when making a call is not possible… READ MORE

Newport News was one of the first cities in Virginia to start sending mental health professionals to 911 calls for mental health crises.
So far, the program known as Community Assistance Response, or CARE, is showing signs of success. But it needs more staff to be able to respond to calls in the evening, so the city is hoping to add one more two-person team to the program… READ MORE

PALM COAST, Fla. —A Flagler County woman was rescued Wednesday after she texted 911 for help.
Officials say the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office received a hang-up 911 call around 4:30 a.m. and soon after text messages began to come in from the same number. “I just found my phone. He is holding me against my will,” read one text from the caller to 911.

SHASTA COUNTY, Calif. — Shasta County’s primary dispatch service, ShasCom, is understaffed and looking for dispatchers.
ShasCom is a joint-powers agency that works with Redding police and fire, Anderson Police, Shasta County EMS, and the Shasta County Sheriff’s Office. Of the 39 dispatch jobs they can fill, ShasCom currently has seven openings.
It’s a challenging task to fill these positions, and the job itself is not for the faint-hearted. But ShasCom is hopeful they can find those motivated to keep the public safe… READ MORE
