Last month, the Chisago County Sheriff’s Office celebrated this year’s National Telecommunicators Week on April 11-17, by honoring its dedicated 911 Emergency Dispatchers.
During an emergency, they are the first point of contact for the citizens of Chisago County, tourists and those traveling through the area.

Currently, one dispatcher handles calls for all 10 fire departments, all local police departments, Essentia EMS, rescue squads, Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota State Patrol and all calls for the Becker County Sheriff’s Office, many happening simultaneously, said Audubon Fire Chief Chris Wiedenmeyer, who also leads the Becker County Fire Chiefs Association.
“The current dispatchers are limited by lack of staffing and are often overwhelmed,” Wiedenmeyer told commissioners during the open forum portion of the meeting. “The population of Becker County has increased by 2,000 residents since 2010. Our call records have increased during this time as well (and) this year we are on a pace to break previous call records,” he added…

A recent report shows Utah’s largest 911 dispatch system is still falling behind when it comes to response time.
This latest report is a follow-up to an audit that was released in August, and that one showed there were serious problems with the 911 response times for Valley Emergency Communications Center or VECC.
That report also found that thousands of callers every year waited more than a minute to report their emergency. In 2019 alone, 17,562 people calling 911 waited more than one minute before someone answered their call.
911 dispatch standards require fast response
National standards dictate that dispatchers should answer 90% of their calls within 15 seconds and 95% of their calls within 20 seconds. In other words, the guidelines say no one should sit on hold in an emergency, when seconds matter…

Today, Senator Rath called on the Department of Budget (DOB) to release critical funding grants for emergency services. Senator Rath was joined by Assemblyman Steve Hawley, Genesee County Legislature Chair Rochelle Stein, Undersheriff Brad Mazur, Genesee County Director of Emergency Communications Steven Sharpe, Members of the Genesee County Legislature and Members of the 911 Advisory Board.
“The delay in the release of this funding for our communities is extremely damaging. As ranking member on the Senate Local Government’s Committee, I know the extreme duress many of our counties are under as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. For the State to be delaying the release of this funding, with no end in sight, is completely unacceptable. We need to be working with our counties and local governments, not adding unnecessary burdens. Unfortunately, this seems to be all too typical for our State. I am calling on the Department of Budget to release these grants (2020-21) and inform our counties when they will be able to apply for the current fiscal year’s grants (2021-22),” said Senator Ed Rath…
