North Ridgeville firefighters urge radio upgrades (OH)

Members of the North Ridgeville Fire Department urged North Ridgeville City Council to approve upgrades to the radio system July 6 as part of a proposal involving five Lorain County communities to lease equipment for an L3Harris system.

The proposed contract with Cleveland Communications Inc. would allow North Ridgeville, along with the cities of Avon, Avon Lake, Sheffield Lake and Village of Sheffield, to lease radio equipment and the infrastructure to operate the system.

The Harris system would replace a MARCS (Multi-Agency Radio Communications System) system after years of complaints from department across the five-city area…

App allows people to share detailed info with First Responders (MI)

Isabella County residents who wish to provide more detailed information to First Responders during an emergency can now do that.

Smart 911, which is accessible as either a website or a phone app, allows people who sign up for it to provide more detailed information about their homes, their own medical histories and even their pets through accounts they set up.

“Smart911 saves critical time in an emergency when seconds count,” said McCarther Griffis, Isabella County’s director of emergency management and Central Dispatch, in a press release. This will allow dispatchers to provide information to rescue personnel about allergies or specific medical conditions…

911 communications disrupted by direct lightning strike (PA)

By around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, 2,800 homes remained without power

Emergency communications were knocked offline for a short time Wednesday evening after the Bradford County Public Safety Center took a direct lightning strike.

The hit came around 9:15 p.m., according to Planning and Public Safety Director Matt Williams, and damaged a piece of equipment that prevented the building from switching to back-up power. However, the county’s emergency communications were functional before then thanks to a backup system at Greater Valley EMS…

Company sweetens deal for E911 program (VA)

Lunenburg County may end up with a better E911 communication system than they had originally hoped for.

During its May Board of Supervisors (BOS) meeting, board members voted to begin negotiating a contract with L3Harris Technologies, Inc. (L3Harris) after the company beat out Mobile Communications America (MCA) for the county’s new E911 system.

Since that time, negotiations have been in the works, and according to Cheryl Giggetts, a principal consultant with CTA L3Harris is now offering a better system at a lower cost.

Giggetts said L3Harris is now proposing a ystem that will provide the county with better coverage and communications for $3.5 million…

Accidental calls to 911 add stress to emergency dispatch call centers (OK)

Oklahoma 911 call centers are experiencing a large amount of accidental 911 calls due to safety features available on mobile devices including iPhones and Apple watches.

According to the Oklahoma 911 Management Authority and the State 911 Coordinator, 12 percent of 911 calls in Oklahoma are hang-ups that have to be followed up on. Almost all of these calls are considered accidents.

For each accidental 911 call, dispatchers must follow up to determine if there is a real emergency or not, adding excess time and attention away from intentional 911 calls.

The 911 call centers also receive thousands of calls each year that are open lines, which means dispatchers can hear background noise or people talking, but no one is telling them what the problem is. In those cases, dispatchers remain on the line or call back to find out if the caller needs help…
