MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Michelle Collins knows about life and death. It’s her job. Collins is a 911 emergency response operator for the Memphis Police Department, and she handles scores of emergency calls every day.
However, there was one call last May, answered by another dispatcher on Collin’s shift, that would not only be personal, but it would turn into heartbreak.
“We have two people shot, one, we got one lying on the floor, gunshot to the back and one to the ankle, we are working her now…”, as heard over the dispatch that fateful night…

Many of us know exactly where we were and what we were doing when the 9/11 attacks happened. I was commander of the SWAT team for the Phoenix Police Department, and the news came early morning in our local time zone. I jumped in my vehicle and drove straight to work, not knowing when, where, or if the next attacks would happen.
Beginning that day and for many weeks that followed, my fellow officers and I worked 12-hour shifts seven days a week to stay in front of the threat. We monitored Arizona’s critical infrastructure, nuclear station, and power supply.

LAWRENCE CO. – IU Health Lifeline notified the Lawrence County 911 board that they will discontinue their 911 dispatch operations at their Bedford location beginning on October 1, 2021.
According to an IU Health spokesperson, “IU Health’s intent is to hold to the Friday, October 1st deadline.”

As part of the N.C. Department of Public Safety’s Division of Emergency Management, the 24-Hour Watch is housed in the State Emergency Operations Center in Raleigh. The Watch is an information and communication sharing hub for incident information and intelligence data from federal, state and local partners. The Watch shares information it receives with all necessary stakeholders via multiple communication platforms.
“The 24-Hour Watch aims to be the eyes and ears of North Carolina Emergency Management, with complete situational awareness of all goings-on across the state,” said Amanda Winans, 24-Hour Watch Manager and State TERT Coordinator. “All information that comes into the Watch is pushed out in some way or another; our goal is that information never stops with us.”
