Wireless customers can now text 911 all across Southwestern Pennsylvania if there’s a situation where they can’t call.
The Southwestern Pennsylvania Emergency Response Regional Task Force said this allows people with hearing and/or speech impairments to access 911, as well as people in situations where it’s unsafe to talk.
Non-emergency calls should still be communicated to emergency services through non-emergency phone lines, the task force said.
Allegheny County began using text-to-911 since 2014, but residents and visitors could not use that once they crossed the border into neighboring counties…

BENTONVILLE — The City Council on Tuesday approved items in connection with a bond issue that passed last April.
The council voted to award a contract to RACOM for a public safety radio system. The initial cost to build and implement the system is $6.5 million. The total 15-year cost of ownership is $12.4 million, which includes $5.9 million in maintenance fees for years four through 15, according to council documents.
The project includes a radio system manufactured under the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials Project 25 standard, or commonly known as “P25,” that improves city interoperability and also creates multi-agency communication on a shared radio channel, according to the bentonvillebond.com website…

A language barrier has been removed for non-English speakers who need to contact 911 dispatchers in an emergency.
Vigo County Central Dispatch has added a language enhancement to the Text-to-911 system, director Vickie Oster said Wednesday.
People can now send text messages in their native language directly to 911 for help, and the text will be automatically translated for the dispatcher. As the dispatcher responds, it will be automatically translated back into the native language of the individual…

NORWALK — The city’s police department will soon receive a $5.6 million upgrade to its communications system, officials said.
Approved last week by the Common Council’s Public Safety and General Government Committee, Norwalk police can begin the process of employing Motorola Solutions to purchase and install a new citywide communications radio system.
The new system, which received approval from Chief Thomas Kulhawik on March 16, will cost $5,561,994, according to city records..
